Flexible Stochastic Frontier Approach to Predict Spot Speed in Two-Lane Highways

چکیده
The approach to spot speed prediction in two-lane highways followed in this study aims to evaluate the effects of a comprehensive set of speed factors, with a special focus on the geometric characteristics of the road segment to which the element belongs. Two flexible models were developed for different types of roads based on a stochastic frontier formulation in which the maximum operating speed is estimated as a function of road geometrics and the one-sided disturbance accounts for diversity in driving behavior and vehicle characteristics, allowing the estimation of any percentile speed. The models are applicable to horizontal curves and tangents and consider both on-site characteristics and aggregated variables characterizing the road segment. The results show a clear influence of segment features on different percentile spot speeds, revealing that recent driving experience and expectations about the quality of the geometric design influence the way a driver approaches a specific road element. Additionally, this study contributes to addressing some of the limitations of existing speed models identified in

Modeling the Operational Speed of Tangents and Curves in Four-lane Highways Based on Geometric and Roadside Factors
Operational speed is an index that represents drivers’ speeding behaviors and shows the comfort and safety levels they experience. Many models had been proposed to predict operational speed in tangent and curve segments of highways. Most of these works had used geometric, with few of them conducted using roadside variables to predict operational speed. Also, the operational speed study in multi...
متن کاملDeveloping a Model for Estimating Weaving and Non-Weaving Speed within Highways Weaving Segments (Tehran)
In weaving section due to a strong need for lane changing, a type of turbulence is created in traffic flow; so, the speedand the capacity of the weaving section decreases. Therefore, investigation of the weaving section is very important. However, due to shortage of the manual for urban principal arterials (highways), calibration of these models is necessary. One of these models...
متن کاملTraffic Condition Detection in Freeway by using Autocorrelation of Density and Flow
Traffic conditions vary over time, and therefore, traffic behavior should be modeled as a stochastic process. In this study, a probabilistic approach utilizing Autocorrelation is proposed to model the stochastic variation of traffic conditions, and subsequently, predict the traffic conditions. Using autocorrelation of the time series samples of density and flow which are collected from segments...
متن کاملStochastic Non-Parametric Frontier Analysis
In this paper we develop an approach that synthesizes the best features of the two main methods in the estimation of production efficiency. Specically, our approach first allows for statistical noise, similar to Stochastic frontier analysis, and second, it allows modeling multiple-inputs-multiple-outputs technologies without imposing parametric assumptions on production relationship, similar to...
متن کاملImpact of highway geometry and posted speed on operating speed at multi-lane highways in Egypt
The paper presents an analysis of roadway factors and posted speed limits that affect the operating speed at multi-lane highways in Egypt. Field data on multi-lane highways in Egypt are used in this investigation. The analysis considers two categories of highways. The first consists of two desert roads (Cairo-Alexandria and Cairo-Ismailia desert roads) and the second consists of two agricultura...
